Overflow Crowds at Legislative Hearings Demand Fair Maps
The times and locations were inconvenient and the weather wasn't great either but that didn't stop hundreds of Hoosiers from raising their voices for fair maps at legislative redistricting hearings last week. People testifying did a great job conveying the All IN Democracy coalition's talking points at these hearings - in every location committee members heard the same message. Hoosiers want a transparent process that gives them time and opportunities to participate, we want more competitive districts and fewer safe ones, and we want communities of interest kept intact. Thanks to all of you who attended these hearings - I was at all four of the northern hearings and it was very gratifying to see our hard work come to fruition.
Rally at State House With Carrie Newcomer Before the Indy Legislative Hearing
We want to keep this momentum and energy going - we have to if we're going to be able to hold legislators accountable. I hope you will be able to join us for a rally and pizza picnic before the last legislative hearing on Wednesday, August 11 at the State House. We'll gather at 11:30 on the steps at Capitol and Market Streets to hear from members of the Indiana Citizens Redistricting Commission and All IN for Democracy coalition leaders. As a special treat, we'll have a performance by our favorite Indiana singer/songwriter Carrie Newcomer, who has long supported our efforts for fair maps. After the rally we'll have a quick pizza picnic on the State House grounds and then all get inside for the hearing at 1 p.m. I hope you will be able to join us - it's been a long and hard journey but we're near the end. We've come a very long way - we can't let up now.
