SPIRIT & PLACE 2022: IDENTIFYING AS VOTERS

Indianapolis – This year, the 2022 IUPUI School of Liberal Arts Spirit & Place Festival focuses on the theme of “identify” using the arts, humanities, and religion to creatively examine ways for the community to better see how individuals and the collective are shaped by the ways in which people define themselves.

Indiana Vote By Mail and League of Women Voters of Indiana have collaborated to create a program as part of the Festival exploring this theme in relation to whether people here in the Hoosier state “identify” as voters. We aim to explore the unique ways we can persuade Hoosiers to identify as voters. With our audience we will explore what shapes our personal identities as voters and how we can influence others to embrace the statement, “I am a voter!”

Focusing on individual and collective identity, this event will engage guests on the history of voting in Indiana and, using the arts, encourage attendees to clarify what it means to identify as a voter. Our audience will examine how their own voting identity has been shaped and imagine ways we can work together to create a stronger culture of voting in Indiana by helping others embrace a “voter” identity.

Attendees will be inspired by short performances by musical artists and have the opportunity to make their own “I identify as a voter because…” yard signs. Together, we hope this program will inspire people to find new ways to convince those reluctant to vote to engage in this most basic form of our democracy.

This is a hybrid event as we want to engage with an audience all over the State.
