Question 1

From Mary Kooi, LWV Johnson County

1. Does LWVIN plan to do follow-up related to the Indiana Bar Foundation Civics Summit? 2. Re. Bylaws, Article XI - Nominating Committee: Does the Nominating Committee notify local League boards that they are seeking nominees? 3. Regarding the 2023 Convention title: we are curious about the word choice 're-engaging' in place of the LWV mission word 'defending’.

Response:

1. We understand that both you and Paulette attended the Indiana Bar Foundation meeting. The state league has been working on obtaining a grant to pursue these issues by, among other things, publishing voter information and a civic guide. Paulette has been involved in these conversations and can provide some background. Happy to share our thoughts during the convention breaks. We would be delighted to hear any ideas you have and wonder if you would be willing to help us work on civic education… such an important issue.

2. The nominating committee placed requests for nomination in the December newsletter (screenshot attached) as they prepared the slate and calls for nominations were discussed at the statewide membership committee meetings as well as other zoom meetings during the winter including the board meetings. Announcements were also made at Presidents’ Day last October. A nomination form is continuously available on the state website and is accepted at any time. (Resources > Resources-StateBoard).

3. There is no change in focus. The Special Events Committee always wants a “tag line” for the major events. The ‘re-engaging’ phase was chosen as a post-covid transition and call to action as public events become feasible… not a rephrasing of the mission.
